Professionally matted and framed reproduction of a 1611 map of Caernarvonshire, Wales, created by John Speed. In 1611, Mary, Queen of Scots' son, James I was King of England (he was also King James the VI of Scotland) and the very last of the Tudor dynasty. Later that year, he would publish King James's Bible which is still widely used today.
This a detailed map with insets of Caernarvon and Bangor, and features decorative elements such as a cartouche, strapwork, and a naval battle scene.
John Speed was a renowned English cartographer of the Stuart period, famous for his atlases, "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine" (1612) and "Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World" (1627). This map of Caernarvonshire is a historical depiction of the area, which is now largely part of the modern county of Gwynedd.
