Materials: crushed malachite, resin, gold paint, felt
Made of colorful crushed malachite stone resin and beautifully highlighted with gold paint, this sun disk/ plaque is of Mexican origin. It is a depiction of the official Aztec Sun Stone (or Stone of the Five Eras and sometimes called the Calendar Stone). These crushed stone plaques are a popular and highly collectible folk art form and this one is fairly old, with the flannel on the back coming loose. The hanging loop is still in tact and seems strong enough to hang the heavy disk. Alternately, it can be showcased in a plate bracket on a table or shelf.
The measurements are as follows:
Large Size : 12” in diameter x 1/2" thick
12” inches Height
12” Inches Wide
The sculpted motifs that cover the surface of the stone refer to central components of the Aztec cosmology. In the center is the face of the solar deity, Tonatiuh, and the four squares that surround the central deity represe
